VR X-ray Trainer

Concept

The VR simulation in dentistry was developed jointly by QM Interactive, CAT Medic, and Walser Werner Software, in technical collaboration with the vocational school in Munich and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich . Furthermore, funding from the Bavarian Film and Television Fund (FFF) supported the development of the content and enabled the implementation of technical refinements. This ensured that the training is as realistic as possible.

The VR X-ray simulator is used at dental assistant vocational schools as part of a licensing model and provides valuable support not only in the classroom but also for refreshing X-ray knowledge in doctors’ offices.

After putting on VR goggles, trainees find themselves in a virtual doctor’s office and are faced with a virtual patient . In this virtual environment, they complete 14 tasks, which they practice directly on their virtual patient’s jaw.

Unique Real-World Relevance

In the virtual clinic, trainees perform a wide range of tasks directly on the virtual patient’s jaw. The first challenge: selecting and assembling the appropriate parts of the X-ray film holder—followed by correctly aligning them with the jaw and teeth for each specific application.

The detailed modeling of the patient avatar’s jaw, individual teeth, and tooth roots, along with the sophisticated animations, provide a unique, practice-oriented experience and bring theoretical knowledge to life in a practical way.

The jaw, teeth, and roots are based on CAT MEDIC’s expertise in medical visualization. To achieve maximum realism, 3D data on roots and root canals from the University of Cologne were precisely adapted. The animated head and mouth, including the virtual patient’s tongue, adds to the sense of realism—and makes learning more engaging and memorable.

The VR X-ray simulator provides a safe environment for anxiety-free learning and allows for the immediate integration of theory and practice. Its varied design not only supports the learning process but also boosts motivation.
